USD’s Haines receives ESPN The Magazine academic recognition

For the second consecutive year, Colte Haines of The University of South Dakota has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men’s cross country/track & field third team.

The men’s Academic All-American squads, which were announced by CoSIDA on Monday, were determined by a vote of the nation’s sports information directors.

Haines, who has a 3.88 GPA in mathematics and computer science, was earlier named to the academic all district team for the second consecutive season. He was also named a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in 2007.

In May, he was selected to the NCC Academic All-NCC men’s track and field/cross country squad for the third-straight year. Haines (Sr., White Lake) won the triple jump (46’08.25) and was fifth in the long jump (22’05.75) as he led the Coyotes to a second-place finish at the 2008 NCC Outdoor Championship.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his institution and be nominated by the institution’s sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
