Clay County Farmers Union campers craft citizenship chain
Good citizenship wasn’t just an abstract concept for kids attending Clay County Farmers Union Camp June 19. Each young person wrote their name and one thing they could do to be a good citizen on a paper chain link.
According to State Education Director Bonnie Geyer, the exercise was part of “Project Citizenship” and one of the main themes for the 2008 Farmers Union youth camping season. Links from each county will be combined into a statewide citizenship chain and will be displayed at the 2009 South Dakota Farmers Union State Convention in Aberdeen.
Thirty-two young people attended the Clay County Farmers Union camp. Farmers Union local, county, regional and statewide camps have been breaking attendance records for the last few years. Young people participate in games, crafts, swimming and other hands on activities designed to instill an understanding of the principles of member-owned cooperatives and of family farming and ranching.
Participants at Clay County Camp included: Derek and Chantel Johnson, Patrick Dimock, Kate and Janeni Struckman-Johnson, Gavin Nickerson, Mia Johns, Tyler, Nicole, and Phillip Hauck, Zheng Yang Xu, Bryson Turner, Haley Falkena, Marshall Boppert, Tatyana Sabirzhanova, Macy Winslow, Ryan Brunick, Tyler and Serenity A., James Goeden, Ryan Styles, Isaac Rosdail and Brandon and Zachary Mueller, all from Vermillion; Samuel and Kendra Jensen from Beresford; Brody and Bryce Surrell from Burbank and Hannah Anderson, Kyleigh and Haleigh Melstad and Katelyn Logue, all from Wakonda. Farmers Union summer interns Courtney Beck and Natalie Wipf directed the Clay County Farmers Union camp.
