USD soccer loses heartbreaker
to University of Texas-El Paso
The University of Texas-El Paso’s Cortney Casey scored the game winning goal in the 83rd minute to lead UTEP to a 4-3 victory over The University of South Dakota on Friday evening in El Paso, TX.
UTEP started off the game strong scoring its first goal in the 19th minute and then added its second goal of the game in the 24th minute of play.
South Dakota however battled back as Katie Quinones (So., F, Rochester, MN) scored USD’s first goal in the 30th minute as she tapped the ball into the net when the keeper was out of the box. Sarah Halbach (Sr., F, St. Paul, MN) then tied up the score in the 42nd minute putting one in the net off an assist from Quinones.
Quinones scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute to give the Coyotes its first lead of the game.
The Miners were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the 69th minute and then earned the victory with a goal in the 83rd minute.
USD finished the game with seven shots, five shots on goal and two assists. Rhea Mason (Fr., D, Gretna, NE) and Quinones each had one assist. The Miners finished the game with 24 shots, 12 shots on goal and four assists.
South Dakota’s Jen Orgen (So., GK, Raymore, MO) had eight saves in goal while playing 90 minutes.
The Coyotes fall to 1-3-0 overall while UTEP improves to 4-0 overall.
