A 10-2 victory over Brookings Sunday provided a satisfying conclusion to a five-game weekend for the Vermillion girls’ softball varsity.
Earlier in the day a 2-0 lead over Yankton in the sixth inning evaporated when the visitors scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to snatch away a 3-2 win. On Saturday, Vermillion played three games at a tournament in Lennox, losing to Sioux Falls Roosevelt 6-2, losing to Lennox 3-0 and winning over the Roosevelt JVs 9-0 in five innings.
Lizzy Bye struck out 10 as a pitcher and doubled and singled as a hitter in the win over Brookings. Molly Lecates also had two hits, Ashley Ouellette doubled, and Kayla Munger, Bri Brinkmann, Jenny Bye and Laura Sappingfield each singled.
“We had a good weekend of softball, playing some good competition,” coach Lori Jerred commented. “The girls are hitting better, but we just need to work our defense a little more.”
Jerred’s Tanagers travel to Tea this Sunday while the junior varsity plays in its state tournament in Sioux Falls.
Jenny Bye was the tough-luck losing pitcher in the Yankton game. She fanned five batters. Ouellette went 2-for-3 and drove in both of the Tanager runs. Munger was 2-for-3, and Donica Crichton and Lecates each singled.
Vermillion played well against the Roosevelt varsity Saturday, Jerred said, but too many runners were stranded. Losing pitcher Jenny Bye struck out 11.
Crichton had a double and a single in a 2-for-3 game, Lizzy Bye and Munger doubled, and Brinkmann, Jenny Bye and Sappingfield each singled.
The Lennox game was a scoreless tie until the sixth inning when a Lennox base hit was followed by a pair of errors, letting in all three Oriole runs. Jenny Bye struck out 10 in a losing cause. Munger was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Ouellette contributed a single.
Lizzy Bye struck out six as winning hurler against the Roosevelt JVs and doubled and singled as a hitter. Brinkmann pitched in with a double while Jenny Bye, Crichton and Lecates singled.
