Zimmerman to perform locally

Published: Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Ann Zimmerman, folk musician from Salina, KS, will be performing in Orange City, Le Mars, Cherokee, and Vermillion the week of Nov. 8. And she is serving as an artist-in-residence at MOC-Floyd Valley Elementary schools in Orange City and Hospers.
Zimmerman sings of life on the prairie, and has performed not only in the windy plains states of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota, but also in New York, Seattle, Boston and Alaska. Last year she won the People's Choice award in the Wildflower! Festival singer-songwriter contest near Dallas. She was recently nominated for a "grass-roots grammy" in the Just Plain Folks national song contest.
She has shared stages and harmonies with John McCutcheon, Steve Gillette, Connie Dover, and has opened for author Wendell Berry. She is featured annually at The Land Institute’s Prairie Festival in Salina.
“She has the ability to seamlessly blend humor and sadness in that unique way that makes you want for more,” according to Singer Magazine.
Zimmerman has performed several times in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota, and her renditions of Bad Attitude Blues, Home Grown Tomatoes and The Plumber is the Man are ever popular here.
She and students at MOC-FV elementary will sing early American pieces, work on vocal technique, and do some songwriting. The public is invited to an all-school assembly at MOC-FV Elementary in Orange City Monday, Nov. 9 at 2:15 p.m., and to an assembly at MOC-FV in Hospers, Nov. 9 at 8:30 a.m.
