Dr. Frederic J. Petersen, 80, Lin-coln, NE, died Wed-nesday, April 30, 2008. He was born in Julesburg, CO, Sept. 18, 1927, to Alfred Iver and Alta (Thietje) Petersen. He married Mildred Athey on Aug. 1, 1953, in Lincoln.
After serving in the U. S. Army in Korea, Dr. Petersen earned his bachelors, masters and Doctor of Education degrees at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He became a member of The University of South Dakota faculty in 1954, where he was a professor, department chair and associate dean of the School of Education. He was an expert in school accreditation and served for a number of years as a consultant for the Air Force Dependents' schools in western Europe, the Caribbean, Iceland and other locations. Dr. Petersen served as State Chairman of the South Dakota North Central Asso-ciation of Colleges and Schools for ten years and as national president in 1984-1985. Upon retiring from The University of South Dakota in 1992, he and Mrs. Petersen moved to Lincoln.
Dr. Petersen's professional memberships included Phi Delta Kappa, South Dakota State Education Association, National Education Associ-tion and the Beadle Club. He was also a member of Lib-erty Lodge 300, A.F. & A.M., Lincoln, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite Masons, El Riad Shrine Temple, Order of Eastern Star, VFW Clay Post 301 in South Dakota, IOOF Nebraska, Life member UNL Alumni Association and South Gate United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Norman Jones, Wilmette, IL; daughter, Kristine, Smyrna, GA; grandson, Graham Jones, Wilmette, IL, and many other loving family members.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. May 5 at South Gate United Meth-odist Church, 3500 Pioneers Blvd. with Rev. Steve Flader officiating. There was a prior private interment. Charles "Bud" Murphy
Charles "Bud" Murphy passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital. He was a magnificent 90 years old.
Charles Joseph Murphy was born Sept. 12, 1917 in Sioux City, IA to Marie (Wilkins) and Charles J. Murphy, Sr. He grew up in a very caring community of South Sioux City, NE, where his mother was the city librarian. His two older sisters, Martha and Marian, along with extended family and many friends took special care of their little "Buddy."
Bud attended South Sioux City High School, graduating in 1935. He was a very good student and participated in many vocal music activities. Music was always a very important part of Bud's life. At the age of 5, his Grandmother Murphy gave him piano lessons and discovered his early talent for playing by ear. This talent led to a lifetime of enjoying to play the piano and the organ.
Bud attended the University of Nebraska, after which he worked as an orderly at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City and special assistant to Dr. Hicks.
Bud married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Lucken, on Sept. 19, 1942. Bud entered the Army and was a drill sergeant stationed at Camp Polk, LA. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he worked for the Albertson Tool Company in Sioux City.
In 1948, Bud and Dorothy became the owners and resident proprietors of Greenfield Store, 12 miles north of Vermillion. This was a wonderful place to raise their family. Not only serving his customers with great care, but also his community, Bud was active in the St. Paul (Rockfield) Lutheran Church, the Alsen Telephone Board, Greenfield School Board and the Civil Air Patrol, receiving his pilot's license in 1958. Bud and two friends shared the ownership of a small airplane and the end of a cornfield as a runway. This worked fine unless the cows got out.
Greenfield Store closed in 1964, but the family continued to reside in the remodeled home until 1969 when they moved to Vermillion. Bud established the laundromat business in Beresford and Canton and was active in the Chamber of Commerce in Beresford. He was also a car dealer for Vermillion Ford and Dayhuff Chevrolet until his retirement and the pursuit of full-time fishing and wood working.
Bud enjoyed a great game of Scrabble and delighted in the competition of the games held at the library. Bud also had the best cared for birds and squirrels in town.
Bud's quick wit, fun detailed stories, and his never ending patience and kindness will be cherished and missed by his family. Sons: Jan Scott, Ft. Collins, CO, Jeffrey Charles, (Jan) San Clemente, CA, and daughter, Jean Ann (Paul) Colon, Sioux Falls. His grandchildren: Megan Colon, Washington, DC, Adam Colon, Sioux Falls, Maren Colon, Sioux Falls, and Samantha Murphy, San Clemente, CA; a sister-in-law, Merle (Ernest) Lucken, Akron, IA and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, 12 brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law, and his dear Dorothy in December 2004.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion. Visitation is 6 to 7 p.m. Friday with Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.koberfuneralhome.
