The Vermillion Tanagers girls' golf team has faced them all. They have gone against rain, sleet, snow, wind, and some big schools. But the Tanagers have risen above them all.
The women Tanagers have competed in four duals so far this spring season and have gone undefeated. Head Coach Kirk Hogen says he is overall pleased with the girls' performance but believes the team can get better.
"We are not around the score range I'd like us to be at," said Hogen. "I think we will get into the low 180's for team scores later on in the season."
Hogen also stated the team this year is comfy with each other and are at equal playing level. "Quite a few of the girls are competing for top placements so they are all very good athletes," Hogen said.
The only senior on this year's golf team is Rachel Odens.
"The girls are getting there," Hogen said. "They are a few strokes off and getting in the low two 200s for scores but they are getting there."
This season has been difficult for the Tanagers for practices. With freak snow showers and gusting winds, it has been difficult for the team to hone their skills on the links.
"The weather certainly has been a factor this season," Hogen said. "We're just trying to go on and get things going. Besides, you can't whine too much about the weather."
Now that the weather has been warming up and calming down, the girls' golf team is looking forward to the upcoming duals, invites, and conference.
"The outlook I have on the rest of the year is to keep plugging away and take advantage as the season gets better," Hogen said. "We are going to work to get into the low 180 range as a team and keep the strength we have now."
Hogen also said, "Golf is unlike football, or basketball. We don't have a defense or other game plan; it's just you out there playing."
The Tanagers have their own invite coming and more duals and invites before the conference meet.
