Gloomy weather Saturday didn’t stop people from brightening their moods by attending Vermillion’s 5th annual Oktoberfest in Ratingen Platz downtown. The event, hosted by the Vermillion Chamber and Development Company, appropriately was held in Ratingen Platz, the plaza in downtown Vermillion named in honor of Vermillion’s sister city, Ratingen, Germany. Vermillion’s celebration featured traditional polka music, dancing, German beer, brats and other traditional foods. The Leo Lonnie Orchestra, a polka band, headlined the event and other entertainment held at the Oktoberfest included USD’s Low Brass Studio. Vermillion’s Oktoberfest offered several activities for kids, costumes, games, and more attractions for families. Students in the VHS German Club and those involved with Vermillion’s German American Partnership Program (GAPP) help host games and run activities as well.
