Vermillion Tour of Green Homes, Part of Vermillion 2019 Earth Days

Meet at the Austin-Whittemore House, 15 Austin Street

Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 2 pm; tour is 3 hours

Join us for a bus* tour of local “green” homes that save energy, re-use materials, save water, and use other sustainable materials and practices in home building and remodeling. We’ll stop in to talk with several homeowners and see for ourselves how they have built green into their homes. With others, we’ll see green on the outside of their homes from the bus.

Examples of green features include a “cooling widow’s walk,” passive geo-solar heating and cooling, solar panels, decks made of recycled plastic bags, geothermal heating and cooling, and more.

Snacks and beverages, including wine, beer, and hard cider, will be served midway at the home of tour guide Jim Wilson.

Space is limited and the cost is low. Contact Jim Wilson at 605-920-6247 or whitewilson@msn.com to reserve a seat for $5. Be sure to mention if you need special accommodations.

Deadline for reservations is April 20.

Please visit greeningvermillion.org for a complete list of 2019 Earth Days events here in Vermillion.

Plans Underway for 2019 Special Olympics Summer Games

The Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company is pleased to share that plans are in place for the 51st Special Olympics State Summer Games on May 16-18, 2019. The Special Olympics will return to its birthplace in Vermillion, South Dakota, after 50 years West River. With many events scheduled, it is expected that over 580 athletes, 250 coaches, 500 games volunteers and 35 delegations will visit the community.

The events will begin Thursday, May 16th and continue through Saturday, May 18th. To kick-off this second half-century of Special Olympics South Dakota, the opening ceremony will take place on May 16th at 7pm. Saturday morning’s events will begin at 8am with volunteer registration, and athletic events will commence at 9am.

Volunteers are still needed for all three scheduled days of the event. Anyone 16 or older is invited to volunteer; volunteers will receive a commemorative t-shirt and be provided a meal during the games. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet new people, and a unique chance to work with athletes from across the state of South Dakota. If you are interested in volunteering for the 51st Special Olympics Summer Games, contact Mike Bartos at the Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company at 605.624.5571 or at Mike@VermillionChamber.com. You can also visit www.livevermillion.com to register as a volunteer.

Sponsorship opportunities also exist! For sponsors of $1,000 or greater, a recognition banner including your logo will be displayed during the games. All sponsors will be recognized in the official State Summer Games program. All contributions are tax deductible. Contact the VCDC office at 605.624.5571 for more information about how to support this fantastic event.

Come to our Shred Days at any of the following First Dakota locations and times:

Thursday, May 2 Vermillion

Shred on site truck 9 am – 11:45 noon

Dakota Data Shred from Sioux Falls will take care of the shredding. Remember, when you throw something in the trash, it is available to anyone willing to overlook the disgusting smells and textures of your trash. So a good rule of thumb is anything that has a signature, account number, social security number or medical and legal information should be shredded. Here are a few more suggestions: address labels from junk mail and magazines, ATM receipts, bank statements, copies of birth certificates, canceled and voided checks, credit card bills, investment documents, employee pay stubs, employment records, college ID’s, pre-approved credit card applications, receipts with checking account numbers, report cards, resume’s, tax forms, used airline tickets and utility bills.

Keep your identity safe and mark your calendar for Shred Days at First Dakota.

First Dakota was founded in 1872 and holds the first bank charter issued in Dakota Territory. It has 19 full-service banking locations in 14 South Dakota cities. It also has six loan production offices throughout South Dakota and Nebraska.
