The 19th Annual Cornstock, a day of music and fun in the Wakonda Park, takes place this Saturday, July 27. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.
The event is an important fundraiser for Friends of the Wakonda Pool (FOWP), a non-profit organization formed in 2011 that keeps Wakonda’s swimming pool in operation. Each year, the organization raises more than $10,000 to ensure that the town’s public pool opens each summer. The group organizes and runs Cornstock as well.
“Every town needs a celebration,” said Kim Johnson, treasurer for Friends of the Pool and one of the founding members of the group. “Cornstock is a fun celebration in the Wakonda Park, and it’s also an important way for our organization to continue to raise money for the pool. We hope everyone will come enjoy the day in Wakonda.”
The day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with registration for the Color Run/Walk, which will travel around the streets of Wakonda, during which participants will be splashed with color. The run/walk officially begins at 9 a.m., the same time that a three-on-three basketball tournament, held on the basketball courts of the park, will begin. Tournament divisions include grades 3 through high school. Call Eric at 661-4709 to register.
The beer garden and food vendors will be open by 10 a.m. A sand volleyball tournament will also get underway at 10 a.m. Inflatables for kids, including a giant water slide, will run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Kids can enjoy a Children’s Carnival from 1 until 3 p.m. with lots of prizes and the Wakonda Swimming Pool will be open from 1 until 5 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. for everyone’s enjoyment.
Children’s activities are a particularly popular part of Cornstock, said Johnson. Last year, more than 100 children came to the park to enjoy the inflatables, carnival, and pool. A $10 bracelet buys a child unlimited time on the inflatables, admission to the pool for the day, as many rides as they want on the Cornstock “train,” and the ability to participate in the children’s carnival.
“It’s a great bargain for a day of entertainment,” said Johnson.
In the afternoon, adults can take part in the Cornstock Poker Run. Registration for that begins at 1 p.m. with the Poker Run beginning at 2 p.m.
A children’s Scavenger Hunt (for kids and teens) will take place in the park at 4 p.m.
Live music in the park begins at 4 p.m. with the Wakonda-Irene musical duo of Matt (Sokolowski) and Joe (Kiger).
At 5:30 p.m., don’t miss the crowning of Little Miss Cornstock.
At 6 p.m., the Gullikson brothers will entertain the crowd. Then, from 8 p.m. until midnight, enjoy the group Basement Acoustics.
Come out Saturday to Cornstock for a great time and to support the Wakonda Pool.
