Vermillion High School thespians are celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein with their upcoming production of the Gothic horror story on October 5th, 6th, and 7th. The play, set in the 1800s, combines all the thrills of the classic story with the campiness of the 1930’s horror movie.

Saturday’s show begins at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and admission is free to those with a Vermillion School District activity card. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event for Clay County, Yankton County and rural Union County

Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be held on Friday, October 12 for Vermillion Residents from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Yankton. There is a $10 fee per vehicle to help defray the collection cost. This collection provides opportunities for residents to safely dispose of products containing harmful chemicals. Unless used and disposed of according to directions, these household chemicals present a threat to the environment. Special handling is required to dispose of them properly. Materials collected are recycled, or disposed in hazardous waste landfills or incinerators. A licensed private company under contract to the Missouri Valley Recycling Center provides these services.

Examples of Household Hazardous Waste include:

Cleaning Supplies, Room deodorizers, oven cleaner; sanitizer; drain cleaners; toilet bowl cleaners; NiCad batteries; floor polish; silver and metal polishes; nail polish; furniture polish; mothballs; floor wax; disinfectants; powdered bleach. Household Products Florescent bulbs; mercury switches and thermometers; bug sprays; Flea collars; peroxides; and medicines. Shop, Hobby Area, and Repair Supplies Latex paint; oil based paint; used oil; used anti freeze; cleaners, thinners and solvents; lubricants, glues and adhesives; stains, strippers and preservatives; lead acid batteries; oil filters; and containers with unknown substances. Yard, Garden, and Farm Supply Pesticides, herbicides and other products. The SD Department of Ag will be on site to receive Farm Products.

Visit the National Music Museum before it begins preparations for architectural expansion and renovation!

The NMM’s doors will close to the public on October 7th, so the last day to visit for a while will be Saturday, October 6th (which also happens to be USD D-Days end day/parade day). Please help get the word out and encourage others to visit! Sundays through Labor Day are free-admission days for South Dakota residents. The NMM’s hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Another good reason to visit: The NMM has just published a cool souvenir book with highlights of their world-class musical instrument collection. For sale in the NMM gift shop.

The folks over at the Helpline Center have recently added new features to their website!

1. Helpsheets – Quick, information documents covering topics ranging from bed bugs to how to help a loved one in a mental health crisis. We are continuing to produce more of these on requested topics!

2. Connections Calendars – Listing events such as school supply giveaways, job fairs and more. Also, there is a calendar devoted to listing professional training opportunities across the state.
