COMMUNITY NEWS!
Jack and Charlie’s Summit League Challenge
Support the Coyotes with new Fan Gear -
We may not be able to cheer on our Coyote teams in person, but that doesn't have to ruin the USD/SDSU rivalry!
Here’s the scoop: USD and SDSU bookstores have from February 15th until March 9th to sell the most items and fill up the Summit League seats on the virtual scoreboard. For every product sold by Charlie’s Bookstore & Fan Shop, a seat will be filled under Charlie, and for every product sold by Jackrabbit Central, a seat will be filled under Jack.
Be sure to shop for all the latest Yote gear at Charlie’s Downtown, on campus or at www.usdcharliestore.com to help fill the USD seats! Starting next week, check back daily to see who's crushing the competition at https://www.jackandcharlieschallenge.com!
New Mural Complete at Community Connection Center
A new mural celebrating the Vermillion community has recently been completed at the Community Connection Center, home of the United Way of Vermillion, the Welcome Table, and Vermillion Food Pantry, among other services. Community and staff input was collected last fall to inform the content of the mural, which was begun in late September of 2020.
Although currently closed to the public, the Leroy N. Meyer Community Room is the largest and most communal room in the Community Connection Center, and has welcomed in scores of community members during Monday evening Welcome Table dinners, as well as for special events and meetings. In keeping with the intention of creating a more vibrant and joyful space for visitors to engage with, the mural project has been led by local teaching artist Susan Heggestad. The creation of the mural is supported, in part, by a Project Grant from the South Dakota Arts Council.
The 43.5x8.5’ mural occupies the longest, north wall of the Meyer Room, and features references to some local landmarks as well as abstracted symbols of community and support. Central to the mural is a replication of Prof. Leroy Meyer, for whom the room is named, and whose photograph in the same fashion is hanging across the room in the CCC. Those interested in learning more about the mural and its creation can view a recording discussion with Kelsey Collier-Wise and Heggestad at the CCC’s website, CommunityConnectionCenter.org/.
