The Vermillion Post 1 Legion baseball team played in Parkston this past Sunday. Vermillion lost 2-3 in the final play.
“We battled against Parkston,” said head coach Tom Heisinger. “They just had a few timely hits that scored some runs. We battled to stay in the game; we just couldn't put a rally together to take the lead for good.”
Parkston began with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Post 1 got on the board in the fifth with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The competition scored one in the sixth to tie the game 2-2, and Parkston kept Vermillion from scoring in the seventh.
The game was tied going into the bottom of the final inning, and Parkston scored one to end it. Post 1 lost 2-3 in a close battle.
Vermillion had three hits and three errors on the night. Parkston had seven hits and one error.
At bat, Dylan Thelen had one of Vermillion’s three hits.
Gray Peterson and Sam Ward both pitched for Post 1. Peterson had seven first-pitch strikes, and Ward tallied six.
Post 1 finished their regular season 10-14 going into the Region 3B Tournament in Elk Point.
“The region tournament is the most exciting time of the year. I feel we have enough pitching to win the tournament. Dylan and Drew Thelen, along with Jacob Chaussee, will have to be huge for us on the mound. We will compete every pitch and do what we do. We are in it to win it.”
The Region 3B Tournament began this past Wednesday with Vermillion playing Beresford. The winner faced Lennox in the quarterfinals later that evening.
The semifinal games were played Thursday, and the championship game will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. If needed, the second game of the double-elimination tournament will be on Saturday at noon.
