Perfect Weather greeted elementary students who participated in the annual Vermillion Schools Fun Run, held Friday, Sept. 20 at the Vermillion High School Track. The event is usually held during the winter months inside the DakotaDome, but remolding work going on in the Dome's interior made it necessary to hold the Fun Run earlier in the school year outdoors. Planners commented that the Fun Run may continue to be held outdoors as the venue of the high school track seemed to bring everyone together and everyone enjoyed fresh air and sunshine while getting some exercise. The Fun Run is held each year by the Vermillion Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to encourage fitness and teamwork while fundraising for school activities and supplies. In the top photo, fourth and fifth grade students sprint from the starting line as they begin their turn on the track. Students from Junior Kindergarten through third grade had their turns racing around the track earlier that morning. In the middle photo, runners stop so that volunteers may check a box on the back of their shirts. The checked boxes helped the young runners keep track of how many times they circled the track. At right, the Vermillion High School pep band keeps spirits high with their music.
