SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
12:59 a.m. - Deputies assisted the Highway Patrol with a traffic safety checkpoint on Highway 50 east of Vermillion. One driver was arrested for DWI.
8:11 a.m. - Multiple calls were received of a pedestrian hitchhiking on Highway 50 east of Vermillion. Some of the callers reported that the man was intoxicated and in the lane of traffic as well as displacing traffic cones. A deputy responded but did not locate the man in the area and found all cones were properly placed.
12:07 p.m. - A caller reported a pedestrian on Highway 50 west of Vermillion. The caller said the man was apparently trying to get the attention of drivers of passing vehicles. A deputy responded but the man was not in the area.
7:07 p.m. - A deputy investigated a report of a break-in at a vacant house in Irene.
9:30 p.m. - A deputy responded to the jail to assist staff with an inmate who was having a tantrum because he was not allowed extra juice. The inmate destroyed an iPod that was provided to him to send messages with. The inmate was segregated from other inmates until he calmed down. Criminal charges are pending for the property damage.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 5
9:27 a.m. - The School Resource Officer responded to a Vermillion residence and escorted a truant student to the high school.
9:42 a.m. - Three inmates who had been held at the Minnehaha County Jail due to crowding in the Clay County Jail were returned to the Clay County Jail.
11:00 a.m. - A deputy investigated a report of a broken window in Wakonda.
11:01 a.m. - A citizen brought a cell phone he found on Highway 50 to the Sheriff's Office. The person who found it had made a social media post in reference to it which the phone's owner saw. The owner picked up the phone at the Sheriff's Office.
11:58 a.m. - A deputy investigated a motorcycle crash resulting in injuries on Highway 19 west of Vermillion.
12:53 p.m. - An inmate was transported from the Jail to a dentist appointment.
2:24 p.m. - A deputy responded and provided traffic control after a vehicle struck a piece of concrete left on the Highway 50 Bypass causing a vehicle to strike it and have a flat tire. The tire was changed and the debris was removed from the highway.
2:34 p.m. - A deputy investigated a report of 4 missing Angus calves which had been pastured north of Meckling near Bluff Road.
4:58 p.m. - A deputy responded along with fire units to a corn field on fire north of Vermillion. Traffic control was provided to assist fire units.
6:44 p.m. - A deputy received a report of intentional damage to vehicle parked near the city park in Irene.
9:27 p.m. - A deputy responded along with EMS to a medical emergency in Meckling.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6
7:34 a.m. - A deputy investigated a report of a non-injury, rollover crash on Highway 19 north of Vermillion.
9:35 a.m. - The School Resource Officer assisted a Court Services Officer in Vermillion with an effort to locate a truant high school student who was on probation. The student was not located.
3:44 p.m. - Deputies responded to a report of a woman found injured in the ditch next to her vehicle. Upon arrival, it was determined that there had been no accident and the woman had fallen after getting the car stuck. The driver was arrested for DWI.
6:49 p.m. - Deputies responded along with EMS to a report of a man found laying in his yard at a rural residence with his condition unknown. The man was transported from the scene by ambulance.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7
2:06 a.m. - A deputy responded to a one car, rollover injury accident on Timber Road. Charges for DWI and weapons violations are under consideration.
9:31 a.m. - A deputy responded to assist a Highway Patrol Trooper with an investigation of a two vehicle, non-injury crash on Highway 50 east of Vermillion.
10:13 a.m. - An inmate was transported from the jail to a medical appointment.
10:31 a.m. - The School Resource Officer responded to a Vermillion residence to attempt to locate a truant high school student. The student was not located at the home.
12:54 p.m. - A patient was transported from Vermillion to the Human Services Center in Yankton for an involuntary mental health committal.
1:46 p.m. - A deputy responded to a grass fire along Highway 50 near Meckling.
1:55 p.m. - An inmate was transported from the jail to a medical appointment.
6:24 p.m. - A deputy responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Princeton St. north of Vermillion. The deputy found the vehicle and two people looking for a place to fish.
7:44 p.m. - A caller reported concern for a man walking with a bike on Highway 50 near Meckling. A deputy checked on the man who was traveling through the area and was not in need of assistance.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8
1:55 p.m. - A deputy responded to a report of a person using an Irene business's trash dumpster without authorization. It was determined that the person had permission to use a different dumpster but had made a mistake. No further action was taken.
4:45 p.m. - A deputy responded to a report of an open door at a vacant Irene residence. The deputy found that the door had not been properly latched and had blown open.
4:54 p.m. - Deputies responded to an Irene residence where there was an ongoing dispute while a couple was separating.
10:27 p.m. - A deputy responded to a report of concern of animal abuse at an Irene residence. The deputy checked the welfare of a dog at the home and found that it was healthy and did not have any injuries. The owner was informed of the concerns.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9
12:36 a.m. - A deputy stopped to assist a vehicle and driver who had run out of gas on Highway 50 east of Vermillion.
9:56 a.m. - Deputies responded along with EMS to a medical emergency at a rural residence.
10:32 a.m. - A deputy assisted Vermillion police officers with the execution of a search warrant at a Vermillion residence.
1:01 p.m. - A deputy mediated a dispute in Irene between a separated husband and wife.
5:11 p.m. - A deputy received a report from a Wakonda resident who received a sweepstakes prize but was required to send fees to collect the prize. This indicates the prize is a scam since no legitimate award will require fees to collect.
6:30 p.m. - A patient was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital for an inpatient mental health committal.
8:26 p.m.-A vehicle was stopped and the driver was cited for speeding on Timber Road.
8:56 p.m. - A deputy responded to a report of suspicious behavior at Clay County Park. It was determined the juveniles were setting up for a Halloween event.
SATURDAY, OCT. 10
1:20 p.m. - A deputy responded to a fire in a farm field near Centerville.
10:20 p.m.- A rural resident called with concerns that there was a juvenile party at his residence while he was not home. A deputy responded to the residence and found no one in the house.
