A 25-year-old Vermillion man died Wednesday after he was stabbed in Sioux Falls, according to a local television station.

Lt. Michael Colwill with the Sioux Falls Police Department said Wednesday that officers received reports of a stabbing and responded to a Sioux Falls hospital, according to KSFY-TV.

At a Thursday morning briefing, Cowill said Christopher Michael Wood, 25, stabbed Zachary Adam Barta on Wednesday morning in the area of 18th Street and Sycamore Avenue.

Police officers gathered information and identified the crime scene near 18th Street and Sycamore Avenue in eastern Sioux Falls, the television station reported.

Barta died at the hospital from his stab wounds.

Wood, of Sioux Falls, was arrested for first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, attempted robbery and simple assault.

Sioux Falls Police said at a Thursday morning briefing that the stabbing occurred after "a botched drug deal," according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

After police were called to the hospital, authorities started to investigate and Wood was found several hours later at about 3:30 p.m. in the area of 13th Street and Cliff Avenue, according to the Argus Leader report. After a short foot pursuit, Wood was arrested.

Wood is being held at the Minnehaha County Jail.
