VIBORG — A Friday morning airplane crash west of Viborg has claimed two lives, according to Turner County Sheriff Byron Nogelmeier.

The crash occurred in a corn field near Highway 18 near the Yankton-Turner county line.

Nogelmeier said the aircraft was apparently a single-engine plane. He did not immediately know the names or hometowns of the two persons. He also did not know their departure location or intended destination.

The cause of the crash is not known at this time, Nogelmeier said.

The Federal Aviation Adminstration (FAA) plans to be on scene this afternoon to continue the investigation, the sheriff said. Crews will secure the site and eventually remove the plane, he said.
