“Currently, Community Blood Bank is teetering on the brink where supply and demand is almost the same and we are maintaining about a two days supply of blood on hand. Community Blood Bank is tirelessly working to meet the needs of our hospitals, including Sanford Vermillion, to ensure blood is available in the treatment of cancer patients, traumas, surgeries and to treat COVID patients with convalescent plasma,” said Ken Versteeg, executive director, Community Blood Bank. “We foresee difficulties in maintaining a sold blood supply for our community in the next three to six months, as we battle critical blood shortages locally.
“There is really no outside assistance available from other blood banks, as we are all experiencing the same tragic shortages,” he said. “ If community members are serious about offering help during the pandemic, consider giving someone life by scheduling a time to give blood to Community Blood Bank, the only local blood provider and support your local heroes.”
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.
