The fifth season of the Vermillion Children’s Choir will kick off soon, and area children in grades 3rd through 8th are invited and encouraged to audition to be part of this special group.

Auditions will take place Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Thursday, Sept. 5, at the UCC Church in Vermillion from 4 until 6 p.m. each day.  Sign up to audition on the Vermillion Children’s Choir webpage (vermillionchildrenschoir.weebly.com) or just walk in.

Explains Vermillion Children’s Choir Artistic Director Gretchen Burbach:  “Rehearsals are every Tuesday.  Singers leave from Jolley School and walk to the UCC church for games and snacks with a rehearsal from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m.”

Any children loving to sing should audition, she says.

“VCC offers a wonderful musical experience but also is an outstanding community outreach organization,” she said.  “In addition to providing the students with an excellent foundation in musical elements and vocal training, it fosters community, provides unique performance experiences, and creates relationships between the singers that can bond students across grades and schools.”

This year, the Vermillion Children’s Choir will be participating in the first annual State Children’s Choir Festival, to be held in Mitchell. The group will also perform the National Anthem at various local events, as well as at a Skyforce Game in Sioux Falls, and will participate in local holiday happenings, including the Library Holiday Open House and the VAAC Holiday Artisan Fair.  The group will be part of Vermillion’s Got Talent, a shared concert with the Yankton Children’s Choir, and will present formal concerts throughout the year for the community as well as for their peers in the Vermillion Schools.

The 2019 -2020 season theme for the Vermillion Children’s Choir is “Rise and Shine.”

“This theme will include songs chosen to wake the senses and inspire us to share the best of ourselves with others,” explains Burbach.  “Songs will feature music from several cultures, styles ranging from folk to pop and across time periods. Our most challenging song will use rhythm sticks, movement, partner work and singing in traditional Zulu language!”

The Vermillion Children’s Choir Is overseen by Artistic Director Burbach and Executive Director Dr. David Holdhusen.  This year’s accompanist is Diane Van Den Over.  USD student Abby Beach is the 2019-2020 intern.
