Vermillion’s Memorial Day observation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at the First Baptist Church, 101 E. Main Street. The event is organized by VFW Post 3061 and everyone is invited to attend.
This year’s speaker is Britt Hughes, a USD student who won this year’s “Clay County’s Fallen” research contest sponsored by the VFW in association with Dr. Jing Williams of USD’s School of Education.
In the “Clay County’s Fallen” contest, education students research the lives of military service members from Clay County who were killed in action.
Prior to Whitney’s talk, the invocation will be given by Pastor Sandy Aaker, chaplain of VFW Post 3061. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, General John Logan’s Orders will be read by Marty Nygren, a member of VFW Post 3061.
After Hughes’ presentation, the Honor Roll Call will be presented by Andy Howe, quartermaster of VFW Post 3061. Wreaths will be placed by Clinton Meadows, commander of American Legion Post 1 in Vermillion, Donna Schafer of the American Legion Post 1 Auxiliary, Rhonda Howe, a member of the VFW Post 3061 Auxiliary and Jackie Voigt, commander of VFW Post 3061.
The program will conclude with a benediction by Pastor Aakre and a rifle salute to honor the dead by the VFW Honor Guard.
