Editor’s Note: We asked Irene-Wakonda kindergarteners how to cook a holiday turkey. Here’s their advice:
Mrs. Hill’s Class
Sophia L: I would get my turkey from HyVee and let it unfreeze. When I got home, I would cut it up and put it in the stove for 10 seconds at 40 degrees. Before I put it in the stove, I will put it on a plate and sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Then I will eat my turkey with my family.
Samantha R: I will get my turkey from Walmart. My turkey will bake in the oven with a lot of salt. The turkey will need to bake for 10 minutes inside a pan with a lid.
Avery H: First, I need to go to the mall to get my turkey. Then, I can put it in the oven. I will put some butter with pepper and salt on my turkey. The turkey will need to cook for probably 11 minutes at 500 degrees. And then I need to wait patiently for the turkey to cook because 11 minutes is a long time.
Xaiden P: I will need to hunt a turkey from the field. Next, I cut the turkey up. I will add sausage and ketchup. Those are my two secret ingredients. Then the turkey cooks for 10 seconds in the microwave. It is going to be really good.
Everlie R: I will shoot a turkey with Estie. On top, I will put sauce and mustard. The best way to cook a turkey is over the camp fire. I will need a wood stick to cook my turkey for 100 minutes.
Lylianna T: I will put stuffing on the inside of my turkey. I can buy my stuffing and turkey from Walmart. The turkey will cook in the microwave for only 30 minutes. With 5 minutes left, I will put chocolate candy on my turkey so it can melt. I will share my turkey with my family.
Rhnissa N: First, dad has to get the turkey from the farm. All of the feathers will get plucked off. Then I will wash my turkey. I will add barbeque sauce to my turkey so it doesn’t burn. I will cook the turkey for 10 hours on the grill.
Emmett H: I will buy a turkey from Walmart. I will go home so I cut the turkey up and put seasoning on it. The turkey will cook on the grill for ten minutes. My dad and my brother will try the turkey to see if they like it.
Wyatt V: I will hunt my turkey in the backyard. I will cut its feathers off and wash the turkey. I will put mustard, ketchup and ranch on my turkey so it tastes yummy. The turkey will bake for 100 minutes in a 1,000 degree oven. I will start cooking my turkey at noon with grandma from New York. I will share my turkey will my brother Macen and Gunnar.
Larry A: I will get a frozen turkey from the Sioux Falls store. It’s okay if the turkey is frozen. The turkey will get wrapped and put in a pan to bake. I will put garlic butter all over my turkey. I will bake my turkey for 10 minutes in a hot oven. I usually make my turkey at my grandma’s house. When the turkey is done I will eat it with my family.
Maizy F: I’m going to hunt my turkey in the woods. I will cut the feathers off and wash the turkey. Then I will put my turkey in a pan and sprinkle it with salt and pepper. The turkey will cook in the oven for 30 minutes at 8 degrees. Hopefully grandma watches the turkey so it doesn’t burn. I will share my turkey with grandma and my family.
Mrs. Ruter’s Class
Aidan S: I am going to hunt for my turkey. I am cooking the turkey at my grandma’s house. I will put apple cider on it and put it in the oven. I will cook it for one hour and the oven will be 65 degrees hot. My whole family will get to eat my turkey and they will like it.
Willa R: I am going to get my turkey from grandma. I am going to cook my turkey at grandma’s house. I will put butter on the turkey and put it in the oven. I think I will need to cook it at high degrees for two hours. Mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa, Clara, and Isla will eat my turkey.
Sophia P: I will get my turkey from the grocery store and put some butter on it. We will eat it with some cookies. I will cook it in the oven for 2 days at 4 degrees. My whole family will eat the turkey at my grandma’s house.
Danika M: I am going to buy my turkey from the store in Vermillion. I am going to cook it at my grandma’s house in the microwave. It will take 30 minutes and I will put ice cream and chocolate on my turkey. We will have cake too. My grandma, dad, mom, and brother will eat it but Hudson will have waffles.
Brooklynn M: I will have to get my turkey from Walmart, it will be big, medium sized. I will have a sleepover at my grandma’s and cook my turkey there. I will put apples with caramel and honey on it and will put the stuffing inside the turkey. I will cook it over a fire for about 45 hours until it is done. I will eat it with mom, dad, Jefferey, and all my cousins and family and aunts.
Bria M: We are getting our turkey from a farm. We put apple cider in it and roast it over a fire for 11 minutes. Nanny will cut the turkey up and Katie, Nanny, Papa, Andy, mom, dad, Rylen, and I will eat. Camden will eat milk.
Estie K: I will get our turkey from the Viborg grocery store. We have to let it defrost then we will put marshmallows and honey and apple juice in it. We will put it in the oven for 2 minutes at 34 degrees. My grandma, Aunt Kristen, Blake, dad, Jett, Alec, Devin, and I will all eat it.
Emmett A: I am going to buy my turkey at Hy-Vee. I am going to take my turkey to grandma’s house to cook it. I will put stuffing in my turkey and put it in the oven to cook. I will cook my turkey for 8 minutes at 200 degrees. All of my cousins and aunts and uncles will eat my turkey.
Oliver A: I am going to shoot my turkey. I will cook my turkey at my cousin Joe’s house. I will put oil and juice and apple juice on my turkey. I will cook my turkey in the fryer for 100 minutes. My cousins, uncles and grandma’s will eat it.
Corbin D: I am going to hunt and kill a turkey. I am going to take it to Grandma Patty’s house to cook it. I will clean it by taking the feathers off and put stuffing in it. I am going to cook my turkey for 20 minutes at 25 degrees in my grandma’s oven. My whole family will eat my turkey.
Jacob G: I am going to shoot a turkey with my cousin’s B.B. Gun. I am going to cook my turkey at my house. I will have to take the feathers off of the turkey and put juice and salt and a lot of pepper on it. I will cook my turkey in our smoker for 100 minutes. I will serve my turkey with ham. My grandpas and grandmas and my brothers, sisters and mom and dad will eat my turkey.
Cash J: I will pull a turkey out of long grass. I am going take it to grandma Kim’s house to cook it. I will wash my turkey and put cookies in it. I will cook my turkey in a very hot oven for 200 minutes. I will eat the turkey all by myself. Everyone else will eat spaghetti.
Chesney K: I am going to go hunting for my turkey. When I get my turkey, I will take it home. I will wash it and take the feathers off of it. I am going to grill my turkey for 1 minute at 90 degrees. My family is going to eat my turkey with some salt.
