Mah Jongg Group

Sonaii Abaeva was in for a new experience nearly a year ago when her daughter, Zulia, dropped Sonaii and her dog off at the Main Street Center in Vermillion back in August 2018. Sonaii does not speak English. She is from Russia and arrived in Vermillion with her daughter who was studying medicine at the University of South Dakota. The Mah Jongg group at the Main Street Center that day welcomed her and asked her to join them in the game. The group was patient and taught Sonaii how to play. Language was a little bit of a barrier but everyone overcame it and found a way to communicate. Pictured is the Thursday Mah Jongg group wishing Sonaii a fond farewell. Sonaii made four different Russian dishes for the women to try and they also had cake and ice cream. The next stop for Sonaii and her daughter is Cody, Wyoming, where her daughter, Zulia will be doing her residency. Members of the Mah Jongg group wish Sonaii and Zulia the very best in the future.
