To the Honorable Mayor of Vermillion Jon Cole and our esteemed city council members:
We as citizens of Vermillion want to support and do appreciate the vigilant actions of the USD students on the Cultural Wellness Coalition. We applaud their actions that have brought to light the significant omissions in the Black History Month’s Proclamation.
Vermillion is a multicultural city thanks to the enrollment of many minority students. We believe that teaching and celebrating history should be a call to repentance for past horrific actions against minority groups, particularly Black and Native Americans. To ignore that ignoble past helps us ignore the continued remnants that continue to be suffered by Blacks and Native Americans.
Therefore, we expect a re-issue of the unedited Black History Proclamation! We also expect a full apology from Mayor Cole for lying to the students and refusing to issue such an apology which should now be published in the Volante and the Plain Talk.
If this seems impossible for Mayor Cole to do, we expect his resignation as mayor of our culturally diverse city.
