Nancy Rasmussen

The 95th Legislative Session is underway in Pierre and I look forward to successful legislation and healthy dialogue within our chamber. One of Gov. Noem’s State of the State declarations was “South Dakota is open for business!” Our state is tax friendly and offers a variety of opportunities. Gov. Noem spent a day at the White House with President Trump this past week as he signed the first phase of the trade agreement with China. Thank you Gov. Noem for your leadership in agriculture!

As you know our first week in Pierre is a time for formal addresses. The governor gave her State of the State Address, the Chief Justice gave his final State of the Judiciary, and South Dakota’s Tribal Leadership were present for the State of the Tribes Address. All three speeches can be heard on SD.Net. I encourage everyone to take time to listen.

Our first week is also a time to put floor rules in place, bills are dropped, and the tone and tenor for the 2020 session has been initiated. Sixty seven House Bills and 54 Senate Bills are available for viewing on the South Dakota Legislative Research Council website. You can watch the House proceedings daily at 2 p.m. followed by the Senate, or listen at your convenience.

I will serve on House Education and House Judiciary this year. I encourage you to send me your thoughts at Nancy.Rasmussen@sdlegislature.gov
