To the editor:
I Love Democracy.
I value Republicans and Democrats working together for the good of South Dakotans. I love equal representation. When I awoke on Nov. 9 and looked at the results from the public vote on who would represent District 17 (Clay County) in Pierre, the clear winner was candidate Engquist-Schroeder.
Later that day, I talked to a friend who reminded me that the 2021 SD state legislators ruled to re-district our voting area. We will not have our values appropriately represented in Pierre. It does not make sense in a country based on the phrase: “We the People…”
Gerrymandering voting districts to create one-sided discussions and rulings is shameful. The English historian, Lord Acton’s quote: “All power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutely” comes to mind. We have had Republican governors for the past 25 years, and there seemed to be an atmosphere of democracy in Pierre, where both sides of an issue could be considered. I am concerned that our current governor is supporting state government that does not value the will of the people.
On Nov. 11, as I was reflecting on the sacrifices my parents and grandparents made on behalf of our country, I realized I need to do my part as a citizen and fight for democracy.
So, what can we do? I called Steve Barnett, our SD Secretary of State at The Capitol Building, 500 E Capitol Ave, Suite #204, Pierre SD 57501. Phone: 605-773-3537. His office recommends writing our legislators to work on correcting the misrepresentation for our county resulting from the gerrymandering.

District 17 deserves a strong voice for local concerns in Pierre. Let’s regain fair representation for our county.
