I was frustrated by how last week’s Planning & Zoning meeting was conducted. Since there was a large turnout of interested citizens overflowing the hallway, Committee Chair Aden was concerned about how many members of the public wished to speak so asked for a show of hands. When a lot of hands went up, she urged everyone they would need to keep their remarks brief to accommodate all who wished to be heard.
Those speaking were for the most part considerate of the request to be succinct but at one point the chair abruptly announced that the public comment period was over without asking whether all who wished to speak had been given the chance. With public comment suspended, the P&Z committee voted 4 against 1 to approve the conditional use permit (CUP) that was being considered.
The CUP asked to allow an 18-home development to be constructed along the Missouri River immediately downstream from Clay County Park which is not allowed by current zoning regulations. This is exactly the same project for which Sarah Taggart asked the county to rezone the region to allow such dense development. That request was denied as it should’ve been.
This CUP approval has been appealed to the Board of County Commissioners. I urge the board to find a space large enough and allow enough time for everyone who wishes to have input on this important matter to be heard before the board votes on it.
