South Dakota Polar Plunge

This year’s 2020 Vermillion Polar Plunge for Special Olympics South Dakota will be bigger than EVER on Saturday, February 15! We will be having a WATCH PARTY for the USD Women’s Basketball Game (vs. Oral Roberts) at 2:00 pm as well as a WATCH PARTY of the USD Men’s Basketball Game (vs. Oral Roberts) at 7:00 pm!! Both will be at the Old Lumber Company. ALSO, we’re excited to announce that we will also have Improv Falls Entertainment from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (sponsored by Old Lumber Company) at the Old Lumber Company. You will NOT want to miss this year’s Polar Plunge with all the new festivities!

The Plunge itself will be located in Downtown Vermillion with registration starting at 3:00 pm at the Old Lumber Company with the plunge kicking off at 4:00 pm. There will be a USD Women’s Basketball watch party before the plunge at Old Lumber Company. There will also be a Plunge after party right after the last plunger that will include a USD Men’s Basketball watch party at Old Lumber Company.

Make sure to get registered, get a team together, and start fundraising to help support the 2,500+ athletes throughout the state!

The South Dakota State Vex IQ Championship is at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center on Saturday, February 15th. Come out and support Team 57069 as we earn our seats to the World Championships.

Food Fight

University of South Dakota Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting food for the annual “Food Fight” competition between Summit League member schools. Food and monetary donations will be collected from November 3rd to November 11th and again from January 18 to January 24. All food and funds collected will go to support the Vermillion Food Pantry. Fans are invited to make donations at the SAAC table in the main lobby of the Sanford Coyote Sports Center during the game. Continue to support SAAC in the “Food Fight” on November 8th at Fund-It Friday held by The Bean where a portion of the proceeds will go to the Vermillion Food Pantry. Let’s support USD SAAC to capture the win this season! In the program's 11 years, more than 855,600 lbs. of food have been collected for local Summit League communities.

Congratulations to the Vermillion Cultural Association!

The VCA were recipients of a $2,000 prize from the South Dakota Gives Prize Pool for one of their Giving Tuesday participation posts! The VCA asked renowned South Dakotan fiddler Owen DeJong to play a couple of tunes in the Vermillion Theater. His performance showcased the ceiling in need of some love and the need for stronger lighting in the auditorium. Value-Added Producer Grants Available!

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Agency is now accepting grant applications through their Value-Added Producer Grant Program (VAPG), which helps agricultural producers enter into value-added activities related to the processing and/or marketing of new products.

Producers can apply for up to $75,000 for planning grants and up to $250,000 for working capital grants. All grant funds awarded must be matched with non-federal funds on a 1:1 basis.

The deadline for submitting applications is March 5, 2020 for electronic applications (submitted via Grants.gov) and March 10, 2020 for paper applications (mailed or delivered to your local Rural Development Office.)

USDA recommends prospective applicants to contact their local USDA RD representative and allow at least a month to prepare their applications. Rural Development has posted a toolkit for applicants under the Forms & Resources Tab of the linked site, which includes an application checklist, templates, required grant forms, and instructions.

Governor’s Giant Vision Competition Information:

The SD Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosts an annual statewide business plan competition. Business competition submissions are due Friday, February 14, 2020. The grand prize is $20,000. The student submissions are due Friday, February 21, 2020. The first place winner is awarded $5,000.
