Merlin LeMoyne Kaeberle entered this world on September 20, 1928 on a small farm outside Vermillion, South Dakota. His parents were Walter Sherman and Margaret Catherine (Hansen) Kaeberle. They were caring parents that nurtured him through early years and provided gracious support during their lifetime. Merlin passed away in Ames, Iowa at the age of 94.
Merlin attended rural District #21 elementary school, Vermillion High School, and the University of South Dakota, where he received a BA degree. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado A and M University in 1954. Following a one-year internship at Kansas State University, he served in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the US Public Health Service for two years. A Doctorate program of study at the University of Illinois led to an appointment to the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in 1960. He continued as a member of that faculty as a Veterinarian immunologist-microbiologist for 41 years.
Merlin is survived by a sister, Donna June Westphal and her husband Dale of Southern Pines, NC. He is also survived by three children: Geoffrey Kaeberle of Roseburg, OR; Lance Kaeberle and his wife Lori of Mechanicsville, VA; and Carla DeWalt and her husband Lyle of Andover, KS. Four grandchildren also survive: Amy (Kaeberle) Claiborne and her husband Matthew, Betsy Kaeberle, Henry DeWalt and Liesel DeWalt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Berdine Esther (Brunswig) Kaeberle, and a sister Arley Philips of Akron, IA. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Merlin was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Meckling, South Dakota, and remained a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. A graveside memorial and interment with close family members and guests will be at the Iowa State University cemetery. No formal funeral services will be held.
