Bruce Boehrns

Bruce W. Boehrns, 69, of Volin, SD, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018 at his home.

Bruce Wayne Boehrns was born on April 16, 1949 to George Boehrns and Joyce Carl-Boehrns-VanDyke in Sioux Falls, SD at McKennan Hospital.

On August 31, 1968, he married the love of his life Renee Butrum, in San Diego, CA, that same year Bruce graduated from Washington High School and Joined the Marine Corps . He served with the Marine Corps from 1968-1970 and was honorably discharged. Bruce then became a deputy sheriff in 1973 and was a sheriff for many years before joining the U.S. Border Patrol, where he worked as an agent from May of 1980 to September of 1999. He was then promoted to senior Special Agent and worked for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service from September of 1999 to March of 2003.

In 2003 Bruce took on more responsibility and became Resident Agent in Charge with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, until he retired in 2006. Bruce was a member of Hall Thompson Post #193 of the American Legion in Irene. He was also an active member of the Trondhjem Lutheran Church as well as a member of the Gideons.

Bruce and Renee raised registered quarter horses. He loved spending time with his horses, riding and roping, he also enjoyed taking the boat out for trips to the lake, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and friends. Some other hobbies of Bruce’s were hunting, working on clocks, antiquing/picking and spending time and helping his neighbors.

Bruce is survived by wife, Renee; children, Audra Boehrns (Shawn Richards) of Bridgeport, CT, Heidi Boehrns of Saint Paul, MN; grandchildren, Anthony Richards of Bridgeport, CT, Tevin Boehrns of Sioux Falls, SD, Destiny Richards of Bridgeport, CT, Joshua Richards of Bridgeport, CT, Terrell Larry of Sioux Falls, SD, Tanisha Larry of Saint Paul, MN, Amber Richards of Bridgeport, CT, T’Neil Larry of St. Paul, MN, Amanda Richards of Bridgeport, CT; seven great-grandchildren; mother, Joyce VanDyke; siblings, Steven (Yolonda) Boehrns of Marion, SD, Kevin (Diane) VanDyke of Des Moines, IA, Debra Boehrns of Canton, SD, Randy (Sheila) Boehrns of Sioux Falls, and Dean (Maria) VanDyke of Seattle, WA.

Bruce was preceded in death by father, George Boehrns and father-in-law, Henry VanDyke; brothers, Gary Boehrns and Lonny Boehrns Sr.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018 at Trondhjem Lutheran Church, rural Volin, SD, with Pastor Mark Ostrem officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Garretson, SD.
