Cheri Lyn Jean Bertrand was born on March 13, 1947 in Vermillion SD to Fred and “Pansy” Bertrand. She graduated from Vermillion High School in 1965 and attended the University of South Dakota where she met and married LeRoy Henle in 1966. They had two children, Laurriee (Bentson) and James Henle. In 1971, they moved to Rock Rapids Iowa where Cheri was an active member of the Rock Rapids Community Theater and Chorus, River Valley Players, Heritage Days Committee, Central Lyon Drill Team, Lyon County Sheriff’s Department and Lyon County Ambulance Team for many years. LeRoy and Cheri later divorced in 1986.
Cheri worked at the Children’s Home Society in Sioux Falls for five years before making the move to Sioux Falls in 1992, when she started working for Avera McKennan as an Administrative Assistant to the Vice-Presidents.
Cheri met Bill Hamilton in 1987 and after many years of driving back and forth between their homes, she moved to Mitchell SD in 1993, where they were later married on April 8, 1995. In 1996, Cheri and Bill adopted Laurriee’s son, Derrek, and raised him as their own. Cheri took a position at Muth Electric and worked as an Executive Assistant to the President until a position opened up at Avera Queen of Peace where she worked as an Executive Assistant to the President for many years until her retirement in 2013. She was extremely active in the Pepsi-Cola ACT Theater as a Board of Directors’ Member, along with directing, choreographing and performing in many of the musicals and plays over the years. She loved camping, watching her daughter’s band (Jade Monkey) perform, the Minnesota Vikings, bowling, painting, flower arranging, playing cards, singing and dancing, attending plays, remodeling houses and spending as much time as she could with her extended family and friends. She loved to laugh and had an infectiousness about her. Cheri touched a lot of people’s lives in many different ways and she will be dearly missed by many.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, William (Bill) Hamilton; her daughter, Laurriee (Jimmy Isburg) Bentson of Mitchell SD; her sons, James (Sarah) Henle of Philadelphia, PA; Derrek (Keisha) Hamilton of Sioux Falls, SD; her extended children; Chad (Shane) Hamilton, Lisa Hamilton, and James (Wendy) Hamilton all of Mitchell SD, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with another baby boy due in March.
