Leota Imogene DeBeer (Ostlund), age 94, passed away on Nov. 29, 2021 in Mesa, Arizona. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on January 14, 2022, at Love of Christ Lutheran Church, in Mesa, followed by an interment at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix at 1:30 pm.
Leota was born on September 16, 1927 in Vermillion, SD to Albert and Etta Ostlund. She grew up on the family farm near Vermillion which was homesteaded in 1868. Her younger sister, Arlene and Leota attended Clay Point Grade School through the eighth grade.
Leota graduated from Vermillion High School in 1945 and was a 1949 graduate of the University of South Dakota, with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics at Mitchell Junior High from 1949-1951.
Leota met the love of her life, Herbert Leonard DeBeer at USD. They were married on June 12, 1951 in Dalesburg Lutheran Church and were happily married for 54 years before Herb’s passing in 2005.
Leota and Herb raised their 2 sons, Gary Albert and Larry Jay in South Dakota. Herb retired in 1987 and they moved to Mesa, AZ where they enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and entertaining family and friends.
Leota was preceded in death by her husband, Herb. She is survived by her sister, Arlene DeVany, her son Gary, her son Larry and daughter-in-law, Dana DeBeer, her granddaughter Taylor and her husband, Brandon Dudas, along with several nieces and nephews and their children.
