Shirley Ann Pastian was born Oct. 30, 1934 in rural Gregory County, SD, to Harry and Ethel Diehl Pastian. She died from congestive heart failure on Dec. 30, 2018 at the age of 84 at Bethesda Nursing Home of Beresford where she had been a resident for four months.
She graduated from high school in Lake Preston in 1952. She attended General Beadle Teacher’s College in Madison that summer and obtained a teaching certificate. She taught one year in rural Kingsbury County.
On Jan. 11, 1953, Shirley married Clare Thedorff at DeSmet. They resided in Lake Preston, Watertown, and Beresford and have been in the Beresford and Centerville areas since 1956. To this union, four children were born. Besides being a homemaker, she was a Stanley Home Products dealer and a grocery clerk. Later in life, she enjoyed her jobs as a certified nursing assistant and child care provider. She retired as a nursing assistant in 1997 to become more active in her church, Beresford Zion United Methodist.
Throughout the years, Shirley was active in Extension work, Clay County FCE Council, and Clay County Fair Board. She also was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary of Vermillion. Her hobbies were playing bingo and participating in flea markets and rummage sales.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clare; and brothers, Richard and Eugene. Those who gratefully shared her life are daughter, Wanda (Chuck) Fergen of Pierre; sons, Ward Thedorff (Rondi Utne and family) of Sioux Falls, Wade Thedorff of Yankton, and Wayne Thedorff (special friend Mary Clayton) of Centerville; two granddaughters, Bridget Thedorff of Oklahoma and Niki (Eric) Rodawig of Elkhorn, NE; three grandsons, Jared (Andrea) Thedorff of Summerset, Brett (Mandy) Fergen of Pierre, and Tyler Thedorff (fiancée Annie Staum) of Los Angeles, CA; great-grandchildren, Owen and Cole Thedorff, Max Fergen, E.J. and Sydney Rodawig; sister, Sharon (Linden) Fickbohm of Sioux Falls; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends; special friend Terri Johnson; and special families Jeff, Kaye, Rob, Molly, Sam and Luke Hansen and Travis, Jill, Lacey and Kylie Mockler.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at the Beresford Zion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4 at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. wassfuneralhome.com
