The Vermillion Area Swim Team swam at the Yankton Invite Saturday, January 11, and competed in the Sioux Falls Invite this past Friday through Sunday.

“VAST has had two meets so far in 2020 and have performed well in both,” said head coach David Lind.

In the Yankton Invite, VAST tallied over 15 personal bests. Three state times were also made by Brynlee Baedke (7) in the 25-yard breaststroke, Emma Lind (7) in the 100 individual medley, and Madelyn Rosener (12) in the 100 backstroke.

“I was extremely pleased with how the swimmers did coming off the winter break,” said coach Lind. “One thing besides more state times that really made me proud as a coach was swimmers getting out of their comfort zones and trying some longer events.”

Theo Wittmuss (11) was the first boy on VAST to swim the 100 breast in only his second meet. Madeleine Eisenbeisz (11) also tried new events. Eisenbeisz swam the 50 back and 50 butterfly while setting personal bests in each.

VAST had nine swimmers compete this past weekend in the Sioux Falls Invite.

“We had the opportunity to swim against teams from South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa,” said coach Lind. “We had another outstanding meet.”

In Sioux Falls, Gabe Haas (11) took more off his best times from the Yankton Invite.

“Kassie Walter was one of the outstanding swimmers for VAST this weekend as she took off major time in the 50 breast and 50 free,” said coach Lind. “Her sister Cameron showed a lot of perseverance as she got a time in the 50 breast after disqualifying in it the last two meets. Cameron has been working hard on correcting the stroke to make it legal and it finally paid off.”

Baedke also placed in the top-4 in three events. Ryder Henriksen (7) earned the bronze in the 200 free. E. Lind also earned medals in each of her three events.

VAST will swim in their next meet the weekend of February 8 and 9 at the Sioux City Sharks Invite.
