The Vermillion Post 1 Baseball team played Yankton this past Monday on the road. Vermillion topped Yankton 9-5.
“We know the kind of team Yankton is; they capitalize on mistakes,” said head coach Tom Heisinger. “We have to play clean baseball and at times, be creative in the way we score runs.”
Post 1 got off to a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Yankton had two runs in the second to pull ahead.
Vermillion scored three more in the top of the third, and the opponents responded with two in the bottom to tie the game 4-4.
Post 1 kept their momentum and scored two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to regain the lead for good, 9-4.
Yankton scored their final run in the sixth. Vermillion won 9-5.
Post 1 had eight hits and two errors. The opponents had five hits and two errors on the night.
At the plate, Jack Kratz and Rylan Craig led the game in hits with two apiece.
On the mound, Dylan Thelen pitched for Vermillion and tallied four strikeouts with 14 first-pitch strikes.
Post 1 will play at home this Monday and Tuesday. They will play Beresford at 6 p.m. Monday, and Elk Point-Jefferson at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
