Three Vermillion teams competed in the Southeast South Dakota Midgets Baseball League Tournament. The 9U and 10U boys competed in the 10 & Under bracket, and the 12U boys competed in the 12 & Under category.


Vermillion 9U


The fourth seed in the 10 & Under bracket, the Vermillion 9U boys, won the quarterfinal game 3-0 against #5 Elk Point-Jefferson White team this past Monday at home.

They went on to play the 2 seed 10U Vermillion boys in the semifinals Tuesday night in Vermillion and lost 1-13.

In the quarterfinal game against EPJ White, the 9U boys won 3-0 in six innings.

Vermillion scored one run in the first, third, and fourth innings while holding EPJ White to zero to capture their first win of the tournament.

From the plate, Jackson Beacom had two RBIs, and Ben Green had one. Green had two hits, Tysen Hovden had one, and Beacom also had one hit.

Hovden pitched five innings of the game and tallied eight strikeouts. Sam Vitt closed the game in the final inning.

In the semifinal game, the 9U boys faced the #2 Vermillion 10U team. The younger team lost 1-13.

The 9U team scored the first run in the top of the first inning. The 10U boys responded with three runs in the bottom, and one in the second.

The 10U team took off in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs. The 9U boys were unable to make a comeback in the fifth, losing 1-13.

At bat, the 9U boys had three hits. Vitt and Hovden each tallied one.

From the pitcher’s rubber, Beacom pitched just over two innings for the 9U boys and recorded three strikeouts and eight first-pitch strikes. Mason Nygren pitched the rest of the game and tallied four first-pitch strikes.

The Vermillion 9U boys went on to play for the bronze against #1 Alcester this past Thursday in Beresford. They were 13-3 on the season going into the third-place game. (Game results will be in next week’s, July 19, paper.)


Vermillion 10U


The #2 Vermillion 10U played their first tournament game against the #4 Vermillion 9U boys. The older boys won 13-1.

The 10U boys allowed the 9U team one run in the first inning. The older boys responded with three runs in the first and one more in the second to take a 4-1 lead.

The 10U boys took off in the fourth inning as they scored nine runs. They held the 9U team from making a comeback to win 13-1.

On offense, the 10U Vermillion team had seven hits on the night. Nolan Nygren had three RBIs and three hits. Matthew Roob and Mason Freeling each had two RBIs.

Ryne Chapman pitched the first two innings and tallied four strikeouts. Rylan Moran threw the remaining three innings and had four strikeouts.

The 10U boys went on to the championship game against #7 Centerville this past Thursday in Beresford. (Championship results will be in next week’s, July 19, paper.)


Vermillion 12U


In the semifinals, the #2 Vermillion 12U baseball team played #3 Beresford this past Tuesday in Vermillion. The home team won 10-0 to advance to the championship.

Vermillion scored all 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and they kept their opponents scoreless through the fifth and final inning.

Connor Peterson pitched for three innings, and Jack Moskowitz threw the last two. Both pitchers allowed zero runs.

Vermillion faced #1 Dakota Valley in the championship game on Thursday in Beresford. (Game results will be in next week’s, July 19, paper.)
