The Vermillion Area Swim Team competed at their second meet of the season last Saturday at the Norfolk Invite in Norfolk, Nebraska.

“We continued a strong start of the season by having four of our top swimmers compete at the Norfolk Invite,” said head coach David Lind. “Overall, the team did amazing. All four swimmers followed up the first meet of the year with more time dropped and a few more state times.”

Five veteran swimmers already qualified for the South Dakota State A Championship Meet at the end of February.

“For the returning swimmers, it was a chance to put all the hard work that they have done so far this season to use in a meet,” said coach D. Lind. “We had several individual winners and because we had so many competing, we were able to put together relays which all took top 3 finishes across the age groups.”

Ryder Henriksen (7) qualified for state in the 100-yard freestyle. Emma Lind (7) also qualified in the 100 free, 25 free, and the 25 butterfly.

“They are now both qualified for five events at the meet where individually you can swim seven,” said coach D. Lind.

Madelyn Rosener (12) dropped time in her events. She is less than one second away from qualifying in the 100 backstroke.

Ayden Rosener (12) swam the same five events from the past weekend, all of which he qualified for state in the first meet of the season.

The four VAST swimmers not only have qualifying times for the South Dakota State Championships, but they also qualified for the Midwest Regional Swim Meet this past weekend. Midwest Regionals takes place at the end of March in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and hosts over 60 teams across the Midwest.

“I'm very excited to have four swimmers make the times for this meet,” said coach D. Lind. “This is a big meet that provides the swimmers to compete with lots of different swimmers from many different states. It takes a lot of hard work to get these times, and I'm proud that they have been able to do it so early in the season.”

Henriksen made the Regional cut in the 50 free. E. Lind qualified in the 50 and 100 free. M. Rosener made it in the 50 free and 50 back. A. Rosener qualified in the 50 free, 50 back, 100 back, and 100 individual medley.

VAST will compete at the Yankton Invite this Saturday and Sunday.

The team will have about a month to prepare for their next on December 13 in Sioux City, Iowa, for the Sioux City Mariner Invite.
