Vermillion boys and girls basketball played at Dakota Valley last Tuesday. The Vermillion girls were defeated 37-51, and the boys lost by three 48-51.
The Lady Tanagers started with a 2-point lead, but Dakota Valley gained momentum and took the lead for the rest of the game. Vermillion was down 7-15 after the first quarter.
The Tanagers were held to five points in the second quarter. Vermillion entered halftime down 12-27.
Dakota Valley was outscored by two in the third, but the Tanagers remained behind 22-35 going into the final quarter.
Vermillion was outscored by one in the fourth and lost by 14 to Dakota Valley, 37-51.
Junior Lexi Plitzuweit tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Lexi Saunders had 12 rebounds and four points.
Freshman Leah Herbster tallied five points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block. Junior Shandie Ludwig had five points as well.
For DV, sophomore Rylee Rosenquist had 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and four blocks. Sophomore Brooke Carlson and junior Rachel Rosenquist each had eight points.
In the boys’ game, Vermillion lost by one possession 48-51.
“We learned that we can play with anyone as long as we defend,” said senior Sam Ward. “We didn’t shoot well, but we were still were able to have a chance to win because of our defense.”
The game was a battle from the start with the Tanagers down 11-12 after the first quarter.
Vermillion gained their largest lead in the second quarter, pulling ahead by eight, but Dakota Valley came back to end the half ahead by two. The Tanagers were behind 26-28 at the end of the second quarter.
The opponents took a 7-point lead in the third and outscored Vermillion by four by the end of the quarter. The Tanagers were down 35-41 entering the fourth.
Vermillion outscored Dakota Valley by three in the final quarter but lost the close game 48-51. There were six lead changes and five tied scores throughout the 32 minutes of play.
Junior Dillon Gestring tallied 17 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Gestring and Ward both played the entire 32-minute game. Ward also recorded three points, two assists, one rebound, and one block.
Junior Jakob Dobney had 15 points, four rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and two steals. Junior Noah Gilbertson tallied 12 rebounds, six points, one assist, and one steal.
For DV, junior Paul Bruns had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Isaac Bruns tallied 13 points, and junior Alex Zephier had 11 points.
The Vermillion girls will play their final game of the regular season Monday in a doubleheader at Canton. The girls’ varsity game will start at 6:30 p.m., and the boys will play at 8.
“In order to win out the regular season, we are going to need contribution on the board from everyone,” said Saunders. “We would like to see at least two to three players on the board with double digits. We have to get back to playing relaxed and shooting the ball well.”
The boys’ final game of the regular season will be Tuesday at home against Flandreau Indian. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.
