South Dakota’s Tyler Hagedorn spots up for a three-point attempt during the Coyotes’ men’s basketball game against Texas Southern on Friday at the Sanford Coyotes Sports Center in Vermillion. Hagedorn set a Summit League record, going 8-for-8 from three point range on the way to a career –high 33 points in an 88-69 Coyote victory.

VERMILLION — Tyler Hagedorn made his first regular season appearance since the 2017-18 season and did not disappoint in the Coyotes 88-69 victory over Texas Southern in the home opener for USD.

Hagedorn set a Summit League record, going 8-for-8 from behind the 3-point line, and set a new career high with 33 points. Hagedorn said he had never shot that well in his life, but he wasn’t forcing the shot.

My teammates did a really good job trying to get me the ball. And overall we played with really great pace offensively,” Hagedorn said. “We’re sharing the ball really well tonight. Guys were making an extra pass for wide open layups and wide open threes.”

The Coyotes offense was efficient, shooting 34-of-59 (57.6%) from the floor and 16-of-23 (69.6%) from beyond the arc. The turnover number was higher for USD at 15, but the starting five only turned it over six times.

“They (senior backcourt) had 14 assists, one turnover,” USD head coach Todd Lee said. “Triston Simpson played 33 minutes and he had one turnover the whole night. Cody Kelley didn’t turn it over and neither did Tyler Peterson. We ended up with 27 assists tonight, which is a great number. We did a good job moving the ball.”

The Coyotes moved the ball well otherwise, tallying 27 assists on 34 made shots. Triston Simpson finished with seven assists to just one turnover. The Coyotes also out-rebounded the Tigers 39-27.

Hagedorn finished the opening half with 20 points on 5-of-5 shooting on 3-pointers. The Coyotes built a 21 point lead going into halftime. The defense played a bit softer in the second half, allowing for a brief comeback by the Tigers that the Coyotes were able to silence before the lead go to single digits.

A couple early second half baskets from Stanley Umude and Hagedorn extended the Coyotes lead to 28 points. From there the Tigers went on a 16-2 run to cut the Coyote lead to 14. Hagedorn started to take the game over again from there. He hit three triples to help the Coyotes build the lead back out to 22 points.

The final six minutes, the Coyote starters did not see much time on the floor as the Coyotes had the game in hand. The return home from opening the season in Hawaii turned out great for the Coyotes. Texas Southern has made the NCAA Tournament three of the last five years.

“Guys came off the bench, Hunter (Goodrick) had a really good game, Ty (Chisom) came in and gave us some energy,” Umude said. “It was just a good team effort. We said it was our home opener and we wanted to start off on the right foot. We don’t want to lose at home at all so we all came with a sense of urgency and played a really good game.”

Umude and Tyler Peterson pitched in 12 points each to go with Hagedorn’s 33. Cody Kelley added 11 points. Yahuza Rasas led Texas Southern with 12 points. Tyrik Armstrong added 10.

The Coyotes’ next game is inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center on Mondayagainst Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The Coyotes will look to start 5-0 for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
