Elk Point, SD -- The Elk Point Colt 45’s banged out 16 hits to earn their first win early in the South Dakota Amateur Baseball season 8-5 at Todd Larsen Field on May 1st.
Preston Fejfar contributed three hits while Robin Chute, Dan Hansen, and Jay Merrigan all had two.
Merrigan’s two hit day also included a triple which started a big fifth inning for the 45’s. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Chute would smack a double that cleared the bases to break the game open.
The 45’s defense was also in fine form, not recording an error in the first game of the season.
Four Elk Point pitchers combined for a total of 13 strikeouts that afternoon. Steven Gross picked up the win going three innings on the day while only allowing two Irene hits.
Mike Moran earned the save, facing only four batters, earning one strike-out, and not allowing a Cardinal hit or run in the final frame sealing the win for Elk Point.
Next up for Elk Point will be a trip to Renner on Thursday, May 13th, followed by a home game at Todd Larsen Field in Elk Point Sunday, May 16th at 2 p.m..
