VERMILLION – The Coyotes starters scored 87 of their 99 points as the Coyotes topped the Jackrabbits 99-84 Sunday afternoon in Vermillion.

The 5,349 fans in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center saw the Coyotes (12-8 overall, 3-3 in conference) lead for 30 minutes of the game, and build a 19 point lead early in the second half.

The Coyotes shot 64.4% (38-of-59) from the field and 60% (9-of-15) from beyond the 3-point line. On the flip side, the offense was not the issue for South Dakota State (14-8, 5-2), who shot 53.3% (32-60) and 54.2% (13-24).

Tyler Hagedorn eclipsed 1,000 career points in the first half, and scored 24 for the game. Triston Simpson tallied 21 points, and Tyler Peterson 18. Cody Kelley added 13 points. Stanley Umude finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“We did a good job of sharing the ball,” USD head coach Todd Lee said. “We were able to take advantage of the ball screen coverage and get going downhill.”

The Jackrabbits, without their leading scorer Doug Wilson, saw Matt Dentlinger rack up 26 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Alex Arians added 16 points and David Wingett 13.

The longest scoring run for the Jackrabbits came in the first four minutes of the game. From there on they couldn’t string more than a stop or two together.

“You have to get a bunch of stops in a row and we just didn’t do that tonight,” SDSU head coach Eric Henderson said.

The Coyotes allowed a 17-1 run in the first half of Wednesday’s game against North Dakota State. USD avoided the run by making better shot choices according to Lee.

“There was a stretch in that North Dakota State game where we took some questionable shots,” Lee said. “We did a better job of staying on offense tonight.”

Both sides will look to improve the defense before their next game. The Coyotes have a rematch with Purdue-Fort Wayne coming up this week. The Mastodons trailed the Coyotes by 12 at the half and roared back to win 70-59.

“Two big games coming up this week,” Lee said. “Purdue-Fort Wayne already got us. We had a 12-point lead at halftime and let that one go, and Oral Roberts is playing really well.”

The Coyotes face Purdue-Fort Wayne Thursday, and Oral Roberts on Jan 25. Both games are in the Vermillion, where USD is 3-0 in conference play.

The Jackrabbits play host to North Dakota State on Jan 22. The Bison have beaten the USD and North Dakota in the last week.
