The No. 10 ranked Tanager wrestling team traveled to Yankton for an invitational Saturday. Vermillion had one wrestler win the gold, one place second and three finish in third place.

In the 106-pound weight division, #2 in Class A freshman Hayden Schroeder earned the bronze. Schroeder pinned Turner Gordon of Sioux Falls Lincoln. In the semis, Schroeder fell to #1 Sloan Johannsen of Watertown by a 2-10 major decision. Schroeder went on to pin #8 Spencer Eldeen of Mitchell. In the third-place match, Schroeder pinned #6 Evan Eckholm of Rapid City Stevens.

No. 7 at 113, eighth-grader Michael Roob finished third. He defeated Spencer Christie of Brookings 5-0. M. Roob fell in the semis 1-5 to #3 Weston Everson of Watertown. M. Roob defeated Dylan Sloan of Yankton 9-1 and advanced to win the third-place match 5-4 over Kaileb Hubbard of Mitchell.

At 120, eighth-grader Connor Peterson finished sixth. Peterson pinned Brandon Sparks of Mitchell in the quarterfinals. Peterson lost 2-7 in the semis to #7 Keenan Sheridan of Sioux Falls O’Gorman. Peterson lost in a 3-6 tiebreaker to Connor Hanson of Watertown. In the match for fifth, Peterson fell 3-4 to Sparks of Mitchell.

In the 126 category, senior Hunter Lavin was pinned by Aiden Russell of Douglas in rounds 1 and 2.

No. 6 senior Nick Roob (132) advanced to the semifinals after winning via medical forfeit over Josh Brunz of O’Gorman. N. Roob beat #7 Brock Sparks 4-3. In the championship, N. Roob fell to #5 Jacob McCormick of Stevens 2-8 for the silver.

At 138, eighth-grader Rollie French fell to John Updike of Douglas 7-11. In the first round of the consolation bracket, French pinned Riley McGinnis of Mitchell. French lost 3-10 to Elijah Leonhardt of Sioux Falls Roosevelt. In the fifth-place match, French defeated Updike 6-3.

Junior Felix Perez (145) was pinned by Ian Johnson of Watertown and Francisco Martinez of Lincoln. In the seventh-place match, Perez was pinned by Conner Thelen of Mitchell.

In the 152 weight class, sophomore Caleb Emerson was pinned by Tucker Vilhauer of Mitchell. Emerson went on to pin Logan Huber of Douglas. Emerson was pinned by #4 Ben Althoff of Watertown in the consolation semis. In the fifth-place match, Emerson was pinned by Dane Mediger of Roosevelt to finish sixth.

No. 6 senior Tyson Hage wrestled at 160 and placed third. He fell 1-3 in sudden victory to #7 Payton DeWitt of Douglas. Hage came back to pin Caleb Kenable of O’Gorman. In the consolation semis, Hage defeated #8 Mac Young of Watertown in sudden victory, 7-5. Hage earned the bronze after defeating DeWitt in the match for third.

At 170, #5 junior Jack Kratz won the gold. Kratz pinned Alex Munce of O’Gorman and defeated #8 Tanner VanScoy of Stevens 10-8. In the championship, Kratz won by sudden victory 4-2 over #6 Lexan Thorson of Watertown.

Freshman Ethan Kerkhove (182) placed fifth. He was pinned by Draven Bau of Watertown. After a bye, Kerkhove was pinned by Jayden Alexander of Stevens. In the fifth-place match, Kerkhove won over Bau by medical forfeit.

At 195, freshman Connor Mattson placed sixth. He was pinned by Blake Fredericks of Mitchell. After a bye, Mattson was pinned by #7 Brock Eitreim of Watertown and by Bryce Kwiecinski of Lincoln to finish sixth.

Wrestling in the 285 division, #5 junior Zack Brady finished second. He pinned Brady Kwiecinski of Lincoln and #8 Colton Lauen of Stevens. In the championship, Brady was pinned by #3 Beau Foote of Mitchell to place second.

Vermillion competes for a ticket to the state tournament in the Region 2 Meet Friday in Brandon Valley at 2 p.m.
