Vermillion girls’ tennis recently faced off against two class AA teams. The Tanagers went to Harrisburg for a dual last Thursday. They also competed in a triangular in Madison this past Tuesday.

“I see good things out of all of the girls,” said Vermillion head coach Kari Jensen. “Their ground strokes are looking more confident and serving is like night and day from the beginning of the season. The Aberdeen Central coach complimented our team today, saying he has never seen Vermillion Tennis look so good. We have a bright future.”

Junior Emma Dahlhoff competes in the first flight of singles and doubles for the Tanagers. She had the best match against Harrisburg according to coach Jensen.

“No matter if I lose or win, I always try to walk away with something I did good and most importantly, the things I need to work on,” said Dahlhoff. “I love this sport so much and the adrenaline it gives is just so addictive.”

Vermillion played 10-game pro sets against Aberdeen Central in the triangular at Madison. Seventh-grader Annika Barnett tallied the one win for the Tanagers in the third flight of singles, winning 10-8.

Dahlhoff faced tough competition against Aberdeen Central’s best player and lost in a close 7-10 pro set. She is proud to have a full team this season to work and compete with.

“I love finally having a complete team,” said Dahlhoff. “There have been years in the past where there haven’t been that many girls out, and it’s been kind of hard to compete as a whole…” said Dahlhoff. “All the new girls this year are working really hard and I am really excited to see where the rest of the season will take us.”

The Tanagers will have another chance to build on their season in the Brandon Valley Tournament this Friday at 9 a.m.

“I especially encourage girls and boys from grades 7-12 to come join the high school teams,” said Dahlhoff. “Tennis is a great lifetime sport, and I encourage everyone and anyone to get out and experience this great sport.”
