Vermillion basketball hosted a doubleheader against Wagner last Tuesday. The Tanager girls won 58-45, and the boys tallied a 73-35 victory.

In the girls’ varsity game, Vermillion took a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. The Tanagers increased their lead by five at the half, up 27-18.

Vermillion continued to pull ahead in the third with the 44-30 lead. The home team recorded their largest lead by 22 in the fourth and finished with the 58-45 win.

Senior Shandie Ludwig had the team-high 15 points with two rebounds and two assists. Eighth-grader Kasey Hanson tallied 14 points—going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc—nine rebounds and one assist. Senior Lexi Plitzuweit had 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block on the night.

For Wagner, sophomore Shalayne Nagel had 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Senior Abby Brunsing had 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

In the boys’ game, Vermillion started with the lead and held it, ahead 12-7 after the first. The Tanagers’ defense held Wagner to five points in the second while scoring 31 of their own. Vermillion was ahead 43-12 at the half.

The Tanagers outscored the opponents by one in the third, keeping the 62-30 lead with one quarter remaining. Vermillion scored 11 to Wagner’s five in the fourth to record the 73-35 win.

Senior Noah Gilbertson led the team with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal. Senior Jakob Dobney had 12 points and three rebounds. Junior Jake Jensen had 11 points, two rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.

For Wagner, junior Dustin Honomichl had 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
