Lucus Anglin

Vermillion's Lucus Anglin, behind, goes for the pin against Watertown's Peyton Johnston during their 145-pound championship match at the Yankton Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Yankton High School gym. Anglin earned an 8-3 decision to claim the title.

The Tanager wrestlers competed in the Yankton Invite this past Saturday. Four from Vermillion made the podium. Three placed in the top 3.

“This time before regions, we really focus on fine tuning our technique and conditioning,” said sophomore Jack Kratz. “Just being the best wrestlers we can be before the most important time of the year.”

At No. 1 in Class-A 145, senior Lucus Anglin won his division of the invite. Anglin pinned Gavin Van Emmerik of Tea Area and AJ Peters of Madison. In the semifinals, Anglin defeated Riley Benson of Rapid City Stevens via technical fall 19-4. Anglin advanced to the championship and topped #5 Peyton Johnston of Watertown 8-3 to win the gold.

Sixth-ranked sophomore Jack Kratz (170) earned the bronze. He won the first round due to medical forfeit over Ryan Treadway of Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Kratz advanced to pin Justin Walz of Tea Area. Kratz fell in the semifinals to #4 Caleb Brink of Rapid City Stevens before coming back to pin Jaret Clarke of Pierre. In the third place match, Kratz topped Watertown’s Tyler Rudebusch 10-3.

“I wrestled really good in Yankton,” said Kratz. “I lost to the #3 kid in state 3-1 in semis and wrestled back to place third. It felt good to compete again in a big tournament. Went 5-1 on the weekend.”

No. 4 Senior Kobe Culver (220) finished in third place. He pinned Jacob Stubbe of Lennox and #7 Jacob Larson of Pierre. Culver lost to KJ St. Pierre of Wagner in the semis but bounced back to pin #6 Jase Langbehn of Lennox. In the third-place match, Culver won a close 4-3 decision over #5 Wyatt Winter of Mitchell.

In the 160 weight class, junior Tyson Hage placed eighth. He pinned TJ Krietlow of Tea Area, then fell to #6 Tyson Degen of Mitchell in a close 8-9 decision. Hage went on to pin Ethan Schroeder of Lennox before being pinned by Daniel Tafoya of Pierre. In the seventh-place match, Hage lost to Emerant Beyene of Sioux Falls Lincoln 3-6.

In the 106 weight division, eighth-grader Hayden Schroeder was pinned by #2 Quincy Hulverson of Tea Area in the first round. Schroeder came back to defeat Jackson Caba of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon in a 5-2 decision. Schroeder was pinned by Watertown’s Weston Everson in the next round.

Senior Brock Voss (182) pinned Tea Area’s Isaac Johnson. Voss was then pinned by Ben Zarr of Lennox and #8 True Synhorst.

Seventh-grader Connor Peterson (113) was pinned by Sam Werdel of Tea Area and lost to Aerin Geary of Tri-Valley in a 1-11 major decision.

At 126, seventh-grader Rollie French was pinned by #8 Brandon Otte of Lennox and fell to Carson Holt of Sioux Falls O’Gorman by a 2-12 major decision.

Sophomore Feliz Perez (132) was pinned by Jess Englert of Madison and Robert Hahn of Yankton.

In the 138 division, freshman Caleb Emerson was pinned by #5 Aaron Ideker of O’Gorman and Carson Lohr of Tea Area.

Junior Hunter Lavin wrestled at 152 and was pinned by #2 Eli Kadoun of Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Quincey Young of Mitchell.

Vermillion will travel to Sioux Falls for a chance to qualify for state in the Region 2 Tournament next Friday at 1 p.m.
