Vermillion Tanagers

Editor's note: Wintry weather conditions that hampered traveled Friday forced school officials to postpone the girls' and boys' Tanagers season opening games at Bon Homme.

Vermillion Winter Sports have officially begun! Both wrestling and gymnastics have already kicked off their seasons, and I will be diving into that next week. Before the boys’ and girls’ basketball season begins with an away double header, here is the preview of their seasons!

Girls Basketball

Our girls’ basketball team is led by Head Coach Jon Brooks, and captains Kensie Mulheron, senior, and Olivia Regnerus, junior. Mulheron is the only senior on the basketball squad this year and she said, “I have a lot of confidence in our team this year. Even though we are a very young team, we are going to be pretty solid. We have been working hard in the gym this year and throughout the summer. This team has a lot of strengths and talent that is going to be hard to beat. We are a very good defensive team and I'm excited to see how well we are going to do throughout the season.”

Last season the lady Tanagers made an appearance in the region tournament, but unfortunately fell short of qualifying for state. Hoping for a different outcome, the girls started practice officially the 22nd of November and have been working hard ever since.

Coach Brooks has a positive outlook on the season saying, “We have had a great first week of practice. We are really happy with how the girls are competing. We have to keep improving to get ready for our first game.”

The girls will open their season Dec. 10 at Bon Homme. The Tanager’s first home game is Dec. 16 against Ponca; make sure to stop by!

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team this year has a lot to prove after their tremendous 22-0 season last year. The Tanager’s head coach Jay Drake said, “We look forward to another exciting season for our boys basketball program. As always, we hope to remain healthy and improve as a basketball team as the season goes on. We will need to defend, rebound, and take care of the ball to compete with the teams on our schedule. We feel we can be competitive and hope to be playing our best basketball of the year at the end of the season when the region tournament comes around.”

The team is made up of five seniors, Charlie Ward, Jake Jensen, Carter Mart, TJ Tracy, and Nick Sorenson. Three are the captains: Jake, Charlie, and Nick. After finally returning from an ACL injury, Charlie is thrilled to be back and said, “We’re all really excited for the season. We want to continue the success of last year's team, and with the group we have this year, I think we can do that and be a really good team.”

With this excitement the boys hope to take on the challenge and have another winning season. They will open their season in Bon Homme on Dec. 10. Jake, fellow captain, stated, he’s “really excited for this year. We basically have a whole new team, but I think we have a great chance at making and winning the state tournament. Everyone thinks after losing those seniors from last year that we won't amount to anything, and I can’t wait to get out there and show everyone what we are made of.”

On that note, look forward to watching the boys and head to their first home game against Tri-Valley on the 21st of December!
