Vermillion Post 1 Legion baseball played their final game of the regular season last Thursday at home. Post 1 defeated Elk Point-Jefferson 9-0. This was Vermillion’s third consecutive shutout.
“Our pitchers really stepped up and threw great games, and that’s why we were able to have shutouts,” said Post 1’s Charlie Ward. “When pitchers throw strikes for us, we can be pretty successful. We have good athletes in the field who are able to make plays so that helps too.”
Post 1 took a quick lead in the first innings after scoring one run in the first, two in the second, and two more in the third.
The score remained 5-0 through the fourth inning. In the fifth, Vermillion added three runs to the board and another in the sixth.
The opponents were held scoreless in the top of the seventh, ending the game with a Post 1 win 9-0.
Vermillion had 10 hits and three errors. EPJ recorded two hits and two errors.
Post 1 finished their regular season 21-3.
“Ending the regular season strong helps our confidence a lot going into regions,” said Ward. “We should be able to carry that momentum into the tournament and hit our stride at the right time.”
From the mound, Jacob Chaussee, Willis Robertson, and Dylan Thelen contributed to the shutout. Chaussee pitched three innings for Vermillion, and Robertson recorded the game-high three strikeouts.
At the plate, Ward tallied the game-high three RBIs.
“I’m really looking forward to being able to compete in big games, having fun, and being around my teammates,” said Ward.
Vermillion hosted the SD VFW Class B Region 4 Tournament this past week. Post 1 won their first two games to advance to the championship and punch their ticket to the state tournament.
The championship game results from Wednesday will be in next week’s paper.
