Vermillion wrestling went to Brookings last Saturday for the Les Tlustos Invitational. The Tanagers had four finish in the top 8.

At 145, Class-A’s 1-seed Anglin won the invitational title. He received a first-round bye, then defeated Graydon Bakke of Rapid City Central by technical fall 22-6. In the semifinals, Anglin pinned #8 Zach McKee of Dell Rapids. Anglin won the championship after defeating #3 TJ Morrison of Rapid City Central in a 1-6 decision.

In the 220 division, sixth-ranked senior Kobe Culver placed fourth. In the first-round, Culver pinned Michael Vroman of Washington. In the quarterfinals, Culver edged ahead of #5 Wyatt Winter in a 7-6 decision. Culver fell 1-5 in the semifinals to Shane Noyes of Canby. Culver bounced back to pin Ayden Viox of Harrisburg. In the third-place match, Culver lost a rematch with Winter by major decision 5-13.

Junior Nick Roob (120) placed eighth in his weight class. Roob pinned Jake Wagner of Canby but lost to the top wrestler at 120, Alex Mentzer of Sioux Falls Lincoln, in the quarterfinals. Roob went on to defeat Soren Aadland of Harrisburg 4-2. Roob lost in the next match via sudden victory 6-11 to Kahlor Hindman of Pierre. In the seventh-place match, Roob lost to Brayden Siemonsma of West Central due to forfeit.

In the 106 weight division, eighth-grader Hayden Schroeder fell to Nolan Miles of Brookings in the first round by a 1-2 decision. Schroeder went on the pin Lane Knutson of Sioux Falls Washington but then fell 3-9 to Carter Ractliffe of Harrisburg.

In the 160 weight class, junior Tyson Hage defeated Emerant Beyene of Lincoln 1-0 in his first-round. Following, Hage was pinned by #3 Jack VanCamp of Pierre. Hage faced Dillon Schneck of Milbank and fell in a close 2-4 decision.

Freshman Caleb Emerson (138) was first pinned by Yankton’s Kyler Lillie. Emerson defeated Francisco Martinez of Lincoln by technical fall 16-1. Emerson went on to fall 4-6 to Parker Viessman of Canby.

Seventh-grader Connor Peterson (113) fell to Harrisburg’s Peyton Tryon in a close 0-1 decision. Peterson had a bye in the next round, then was pinned by Andrew Weiland of Dell Rapids.

At 126, seventh-grader Rollie French was pinned by #6 Logan O’Connor of Harrisburg and topped by Cameron Girard of Brookings.

Sophomore Felix Perez (132) was pinned by #7 Hayden Shaffer of Pierre, then he received a bye. Perez was then pinned by Tanner Drietz of Canby.

Vermillion will wrestle at home Tuesday against Sioux Falls Washington at 5 p.m.
