The Tanager cross country team raced in the Region 3A Meet last Thursday in Lennox.
“I can't say enough about how well our kids performed,” said Vermillion head coach Kelly Fischbach. “We had some young kids really step up to do what it took to repeat as Region 3A champs.”
The Vermillion boys won the region team title and qualified for state as a team. The Vermillion girls placed fourth, and two runners qualified individually.
Senior Riley Ruhaak won the individual Region 3A title in the boys’ varsity 5-kilometer run. Ruhaak was the first to cross at 16:46.94.
“Riley Ruhaak looked great in his championship run to repeat as region champ,” said coach Fischbach.
Freshman Joel Dahlhoff placed seventh as he crossed the finish in 17:29.11.
Sophomore Emery Bohnsack placed 14th in 17:55.67. Sophomore Jack Freeburg followed in 17:59.72 for 15th place.
Freshman Henry Anderson finished in 18:18.67 for 22nd place, and freshman Jacob Chasing Hawk finished 30th in 19:12.69.
In the girls’ varsity race, freshman Taeli Barta earned second place individually. Barta finished in 19:33.80.
Eighth-grader Lydia Anderson placed 13th at 21:10.80 and qualified for state.
Eighth-grader Mya Halvorson was 24th at 22:20.30. Seventh-grader Calli Radigan placed 28th in 22:36.80, and seventh-grader Olivia Formisano was 29th in 22:37.10.
Freshman Tori Farmer finished in 33rd at 22:58.00.
“The girls’ team finished fourth, just one spot off qualifying as a team,” said coach Fischbach. “On a positive note, they all return next year.”
The Tanagers are off to state this Saturday in Rapid City. Class A girls will race at 3:30 p.m. MT. Class A boys will run after at 4:15 p.m. MT.
