The Post 1 Legion Baseball team went to Garretson this past weekend to play Garretson and Lake Norden. They defeated the host team 12-8 and Lake Norden 11-6.

Against Garretson, Vermillion scored the first two runs in the top of the third inning. Garretson followed with three in the bottom of the third.

Post 1 scored one more in the fourth. The opponents responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Vermillion remained behind 3-8 through the fifth inning.

In the sixth, Post 1 got their bats going as the scored two runs to close the gap. Vermillion scored three more in the seventh to tie the game 8-8, sending it into extra innings.

Post 1 scored four runs and kept Garretson from scoring any in the eighth to win 12-8.

Both teams had 14 hits and one error throughout the game.

“We just mentally stayed in the game,” said head coach Tom Heisinger. “We didn't try to do too much; we just played together and passed the baton to the next guy. I thought our kids did a good job of competing and finding a way.”

At bat, Jack Kratz tallied four RBIs. Jacob Chaussee had two hits.

From the mound, Gray Peterson threw five innings, and Drew Thelen pitched three. Drew Thelen recorded five strikeouts, and Peterson had three.

Against Lake Norden, Vermillion remained hot on offense as they took an 8-0 lead in the first two innings. They scored five in the first and three in the second.

Lake Norden scored their first run in the third inning. They scored another five in the top of the fourth to narrow Vermillion’s lead 8-6.

Post 1 scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lake Norden could not narrow their deficit in the top of the fifth which ended the game early. Post 1 captured the win 11-6.

Vermillion had 11 hits and one error against Lake Norden. The opponents had eight hits and no errors.

“We talked about having a quick turnaround,” said coach Heisinger. “We wanted two wins that day and knew we couldn't be satisfied after the first game.”

From the plate, Dylan Thelen had one RBI and two hits for Post 1.

On the mound, Sam Ward pitched four innings and tallied three strikeouts.

Post 1 improved their record to 5-8 after the weekend.

The Post 1 Legion team will play Monday and Tuesday at home. They will play Beresford at 6 p.m. Monday, and Elk Point-Jefferson at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
