Vermillion gymnastics competed in the Region 2A Meet last Friday in Chamberlain for a chance to qualify for state this upcoming weekend in Aberdeen. The Tanagers qualified as a team with several gymnasts qualifying in individual events as well.

“I could not be happier with our performance at regions,” said Vermillion head coach Shannon Fitzsimmons. “Each girl contributed in a significant way to our result. Despite being a young team, the girls worked hard throughout the season to gain skills and improve their routines. They maintained positive attitudes and encouraged one another along the way.”

Vermillion placed fifth in the region with 122.625 team points. Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mt. Vernon won with a 131.1 total.

“We knew that qualifying for state was going to require a full team effort, and that is exactly what the girls gave on Friday night,” said coach Fitzsimmons. “The girls used their solid start on vault and bars to give them momentum heading into the balance beam, resulting in an impressive six out of six stuck beam routines. We have worked on gaining confidence on beam throughout the season, so it was really special to see them do that as a full team. Our goal heading into floor was simply to finish strong and have fun.”

Sophomore Mackenzie Brady qualified for state in the all-around, placing seventh with 32.475 for a total score. Brady was fourth in the beam with 8.275, finished tenth in the vault (8.525), placed 11th in the bars (7.45), and was 13th in the floor exercise (8.225).

Eighth-grader Tori Farmer qualified for state in the bars and the beam. She earned the bronze in the beam with an 8.375. Farmer also scored a 7.35 in the bars to place 15th, an 8.1 in the vault (20th), and a 7.45 in the floor (27th). Farmer placed 12th in the all-around (31.275).

Freshman Maya Radigan qualified in the beam with 7.475 to finish 23rd. She scored a 6.275 on the bars (23rd), 7.475 in the floor (25th), and a 6.85 in the vault. Radigan tied for 19 in the all-around (28.075).

Freshman Abby Roob qualified in the beam after placing 12th with a 7.425. She scored 4.575 on the bars (36th), 6.875 in the floor (38th), and a 7.375 in the vault (38th). Roob was 27th in the all-around (26.25).

Eighth-grader Serena Gapp qualified in the bars and the beam. She placed fifth in the bars with a 7.85 and tied for eighth in the bars (7.875).

Eighth-grader Mercedes Hoffman scored 7.05 in the beam (19th), 7.025 in the floor (34th), and a 7.525 in the vault (35th).

“We scored our season-high and secured a wild card qualifying spot,” said coach Fitzsimmons. “It was a really special night. Heading into state, our goal is to continue to improve as a team and gain state meet experience that the girls can then utilize in the following years.”

Vermillion will finish their season at the State Gymnastics Meet this Friday and Saturday in Aberdeen.
